6 FACTS ABOUT DRUMS YOU (PROBABLY) NEVER KNEW! (NO. 5 IS VERY IMPORTANT! )
Drums are an instrument full of a rich, deep and interesting history. The first drum/s date back hundreds of years and have come a long, long way since the sticks first hit the skins (.. people used to use actual animal skins!)
Here I have compiled a list of some interesting facts about the instrument we have grown to cherish and love today.
#1. THE FIRST DRUM STICK/S DATES BACK TO THE 1300S
The first evidence of them being played culturally using sticks is from the 1300s.
They were originally used to hit drums called 'Tabor'. Which, were the snare drums of the time.
#2 THE MODERN SNARE WAS CREATED IN THE EARLY 1900S
Modern snare emerged in the early 1900s in WWI. The use of coiled wire was out on the snare giving it its signature crack and buzz that we know and love today.
A throw-off lever switch was added which would allow the snare wires to loosen. Even to the point where the snare would sound like another tom.
#3 DRUMS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN USED FOR COMMUNICATION
Since European Medieval and Renaissance times drums were and have been used by the military to convey messages to one another.
Similarly, Indians use this method to convey messages over long distances.
Indginous and aboriginal tribes and communities still use these methods heavily today, with drum messages travelling over 100 mph.
4# THE MOST EXPENSIVE DRUM KIT EVER SOLD
The most expensive drum kit ever sold belonged to Ringo Starr, the well-known drummer from The Beatles.
It was sold at Julien's Auction on December 5th, 2015 for a cool £2.1 Million!
#5 PLAYING DRUMS IS BENEFICIAL TO MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH
Playing the drums is proven to reduce cortisol and other stress hormone levels in the brain! This leads to a better state of well-being, contentment and happiness.
As well as being physically beneficial (half an hour of drumming burns more calories than cycling!) it is time and time again proven to help boost our immune systems and increase dopamine (the chemical which makes us happy) in our brains!
6# You can learn how to play the drums on just about anything!
Drumming is a primal instrument. It taps into a very core part of who we are. Think about it, everything in our body and mind operates to a rhythm! We literally operate in patterns.
You can learn the drums by tapping on tables, walls, the floor, anything! Anything that you can create a rhythm on, you can turn into drums.
Get an old bucket laying in your garage, flip it upside down and create your own patterns.
